What to Expect When You're No Longer Expecting

Date: Saturday May 17th

Location: Japara House, Kilsyth

Time: 2pm - 4pm

Menopause. Some women look forward to it because it will mean an end to "the dreaded periods". Some are apprehensive about it because it signifies an end of "something" and a beginning of a new, different phase. Some are mystified by it and are not sure what to expect. The common thread I see is menopause is poorly understood among women and men, and is not often talked about.

Menopause is not just the cessation of menstrual cycles. Typically, it is not a sudden change. Rather, menopause can be preceded by a lot of hormone- and cycle- irregularities and associated with a number of physical and emotional changes such as anxiety, sleeping difficulties, mood swings, joint aches and weight gain.

In this talk we look at the menstrual cycle and what changes in perimenopause and menopause. We discuss what can be expected in the time leading up to menopause and recognise some of the symptoms that can be associated or contributed to by hormone changes seen around this time. We talk about how best to prepare ourselves for this time by looking at lifestyle and dietary changes that can often make a big difference in how we feel. We also discuss management options available to women when the simple measures don't help with symptoms. The aim of this talk is to provide information and empower women to optimise their health and live their best life. Period.
