EXPLORING PREGNANCY, BIRTH AND MOTHERHOOD CHOICES

Research by Charles Sturt University.

You are invited to participate in a research study investigating women’s choices related to motherhood. Participation is open to all women, aged 18 and over, whether you are a mother or not.

Participation should take no longer than 25-30 minutes. It involves reading a series of vignettes and indicating what you would do if you were in such a situation, and what you think other people should do. These vignettes will describe circumstances and choices around breastfeeding, Caesarean sections, and career-family trade-offs. We don’t expect these vignettes to cause distress for most women. But if you have had a negative or upsetting experience, such that contemplating these topics may cause you distress or discomfort, then please do not participate.

You will also be asked some questions to measure your social attitudes, and brief demographic questions about your age, gender, sexual orientation, employment status, socioeconomic status and your history, including whether you have experience with pregnancy, Caesarean sections, and breastfeeding.

There is no payment or reward for participating in this study. Although there are no direct rewards for participating in this study, this project will help to provide a greater understanding of the factors influencing women’s important motherhood choices.

The data collected will be presented in Ms Madeline Adams’ and Ms Erin McAuley’s Masters Dissertations, and may also be presented at academic conferences or published in peer-reviewed journals. The researchers named on this Information Statement, and other researchers who may join the research team in the future, may also re-analyse your data as part of future related or un-related studies.

Your anonymity is assured as no identifying information is being recorded. Following completion of the study, all responses will be password protected and accessible only by the named researchers.

Should the findings of the study be published, anonymous response data (allowing the reported findings to be verified) will then be placed in a public data repository. No individual participant will be identified in, or could be identified from, any published report or published dataset from this study.

Participation is entirely voluntary. Whether or not you decide to participate is your decision and will not disadvantage you. If you do decide to participate, you may withdraw yourself and your data from the project at any time (prior to finishing the online survey by closing your browser window), without reason or consequence. Should you choose to withdraw from this study prior to its completion, we may retain and analyse all data collected from you up until that point.

Since participation is anonymous, there is no way of identifying your individual data once it has been submitted. It is therefore not possible to withdraw from the study after you have submitted your data at the end. If you feel uncomfortable during this survey, you are encouraged to discontinue participating.
